One of the oldest daily fee courses in the metro area, West Pines underwent a major facelift in 2006, with former tour player turned course designer Bill Bergin extensively renovating the layout. Many of the current holes are completely new, with only six or seven holes still in the same corridor, and some changing direction from the original design.

The renovated layout has added a considerable amount of length, and from the back tees plays to a par 71 at over 6,800 yards. The blue tees (6,332) are comparable in length to the original back tees, and with the exception of a few holes closing out the front nine, West Pines is by no means a short course. Several elevated tee shots are offset by some uphill approaches, and the fairways range from extremely forgiving to relatively narrow and tree-lined.

The routing of the course is markedly different from that of the original layout, with holes 1, 2 and 4 still pretty much the same, but 13, 14 and 15. The pond bordering the fairway on the par-5 13th is an intimidating site, but there is more fairway than it appears, with the second shot over the hazard the more difficult shot. The first three par 5s have ample amounts of trouble in play, with the all new 17th, which runs parallel to and borders on I-20, a little less stressful.

The rolling terrain is a factor both off the tee and in the short game, with the putting surfaces on the large side and having a reasonable amount of undulation. Most of the angles to the greens are open, with a modest amount of bunkers in play. Apart from three of the par 5s, there are few hazards in play, helping to make more for a comfortable and enjoyable experience, with the rates among the most affordable in the metro area.

  1. Beautiful and very challenging redesign at this course, including a great 6-hole stretch to start the round with length, elevation changes, and hazards. Very few “breather” holes on this course off of the blue tees on a course that has a little bit of everything. A great golf course, very friendly staff. I will definitely come back for more of this one.

Played West Pines based on one of your blasts. Played from the tips. Cool course and you can see that some cash has been put into it. Greens were great. Staff was very friendly and we walked up with no tee time, paid and then played 18 in 2 hours and 40 mins.

  3. West Pines is a course in the area I was previously unaware of. I was impressed with the overall excellent course conditions, tee to green. Most notable were the immaculate greens and bunkers. Staff were all cordial. Also impressed by the exceptional courtesy of the grounds crew.

  4. I heard about West Pines from golfatlanta.com and went to check it out after playing another round that morning out in Douglasville. I’d always seen it from I-20 but knew nothing about it. You can tell the course was recently in rough shape but its on its way back after a $4.9 million dollar renovation . The greens were a little slow, but otherwise fantastic. An enjoyable layout with a very long finishing hole par 3. The price is a super deal though and I’ll be going back again.

  5. Challenging hilly course, elevation changes makes you use extra clubs. Not a lot of water, but what they do have is placed well. Greens have been kept in great condition. Fairways have been resodded and they keep improving. Friendly staff, nice snackbar.
